Movement Possibilities Workshop #1: Taking Inventory

How shall I move? Taking inventory

I’m standing/sitting/lying here, anticipating an experience that may involve moving my body. I hear the music starting. What now?

What now, indeed. This is freeform movement. Anything goes. There is no instructor telling me what to do or how or when to do it. It’s my choice.

I realize that my movement possibilities are infinite—within the safety range of my body’s capabilities, of course. (And this is a whole other conversation we will have later.) 

In this moment, I’m noticing … what? Overwhelm? Excitement? Hesitation? Shyness? Stuck-ness? Curiosity? Connection? Anticipation? Dread? Resignation? Shame? Confidence? Confusion? Panic? Calm?

I remind myself that all emotional and mental states are welcome in the still.being.moved practice. Useful, in fact. So I invite them to show up wholeheartedly in my experience and I imagine how I might play with and metabolize them. I remind myself that they’re all allies in support of my well-being, even if that seems unclear at first.

I notice my physical state. What am I sensing in my body? Am I comfortable? If not, how, specifically, do I feel? Weary? Sore? Achy? Stiff? Itchy? Twitchy? Cold? Hot? Hungry? Bloated? Dizzy? 

Okay, now I know what I’m working with and which parts of my body may need intentional nurturing.

There’s more to consider here: Breathing. Groundedness. Stability. Safety and privacy in my space. Lighting. Volume and quality of the music. What I’m wearing. The surfaces available for me to lie/sit/stand on. Props and toys: pillows, scarves, balls, a mat.

So … I’m standing/sitting/lying here, anticipating an experience that may involve moving my body. I hear the music starting. What now?

I keep it simple. I breathe. I focus on the sensations in my body. I relax, I wait, I am ready …
