Ikko Narahara. España: Grand Tarde, Fiesta, Vaya Con Dios, 1969. Large 4to. Illustrated throughout in black and white; hot pastel-colored endpapers; illustrated and pictorial boards.
A tour de force of Japanese photography. Supplemental softbound volume contains Narahara's essay titled "The Promised Journey"; illustrated endpapers; pictorial and illustrated wrappers. Both volumes held in pictorial slipcase. This book is divided into sections titled Grand Tarde, Fiesta, and Vaya Con Dios that deal with the bull fight, the urban life in the streets, and the peasant life in the countryside. The influence of William Klein is visible in this volume's dramatic close-ups, erratic croppings, and full-page bleeds (which, in the case of the abundant double gatefold spreads, are actually four-page bleeds).
Housed in a cardboard open-ended shipping slipcase which shows some minor wear, dents, and foxing marks. Otherwise in fine condition. Paper over boards slipcase is in fine condition.
Covers are in excellent condition. No foxing whatsoever; pages are very clean and still have a very crisp look. Accompanying booklet in Japanese and English in near fine condition with some minor foxing to the top and side edge of the back cover. Acetate cover for both books is in excellent condition with vertical crease but no tears or losses.
