This Medicine Moves Playshop series might be for you if:

  • you’ve heard about—or experienced—the benefits of movement and want to bring more of it into your life

  • you love music and are ready to hear a wide variety of new tunes

  • you prefer your own private space to a studio or gym

  • you’d enjoy a friendly community experience facilitated by an experienced leader

  • you’re interested in freeform movement and are looking for guidance and inspiration

Not coordinated?

No problem. (Really.)

Can’t dance?

Okay. So bring your curiosity and see what happens.

Self-conscious?

Turn off your camera. Any time. It’s fine.

Have physical limitations?

We’ll work with whatever you bring.

To clarify this final point …

Just bring whatever you already know about movement modalities—be they Nia, Yoga, Pilates, Ecstatic Dance, Martial Arts, 5 Rhythms, or activities such as walking, swimming, riding a bike, playing Pickleball, dancing in clubs or at festivals, making love, whatever …

… AND it’s also great to bring a blank slate and a beginner’s mindset.

I bring my commitment to guide you skillfully, compassionately, and safely.

I hope it’s clear that all of us are invited to bring ourselves exactly as we are, complete with limitations, preoccupations, and emotions. These are our raw materials for the experience.

The really good news? You can’t get it wrong.

Who I Am

Kathryn Thomas

Informed and inspired by my 30-year love affair with teaching Nia and Yoga—and my PhD in Education—I have been leading online movement events since 2020.

My years of learning and teaching classic Nia and traditional Hatha Yoga have helped me investigate how best to recognize, honor, and tend to my body’s idiosyncrasies—now well into my 70s. In the process, I’ve cultivated awareness of how to help others learn to balance, strengthen, heal, and enjoy their bodies.

Of equal value (and juiciness, IMO), I’ve explored movement for other purposes—recognizing, embodying, and releasing emotions, for example—that also enhance well-being. Over time, I’ve developed teaching practices that incorporate and transmit these benefits—joyfully and playfully!

And … as you might guess from my photo, play is at the heart of my work. Let’s have some fun together!

Session Flow

You can learn more about each by clicking on each image.

Freedom within Form

We start with whatever we bring and play within safe, familiar somatic structures.

Play

Witness others' playfulness and, when you’re ready, find your way into your own.

Base and Beat

We play with our base: feet on floor, butt in chair, on all fours, or body on mat.

Breath

Breath play—not to be confused with breath work! No experience or training required.

Spine in Six Directions

From sitting, standing, all fours, or reclining, we practice slow, gentle, safe spinal movement.

Voice

Experience the pleasure and creativity in your voice. And we’ll all be muted …

Kind Words for Kathryn

Kathryn’s experiences are a lift for my spirit. She holds a beautiful space—a judgement-free zone where I can be myself, play the way I want to, and move in the ways that feel best to me.
— J.B., Florida

I have been dancing and moving with Kathryn for years. I love the spontaneous mix of flow and thoughtful art-body wave forms that I come up with, through her guidance and eclectic music selections. It’s always an emotional experience, putting me more in the present and in touch with my body and its limitations or areas that need more fun. Nothing is ever too much or too little, right or wrong - it’s all an exploration of life, love, and wisdom. A spiritual practice not to be missed.
— R.M.

After my practice, I feel like I’ve journeyed through myself, like a fresh breeze has freshened up the dark, unswept corners of my being. I notice that my whole body is pulsing or humming with energy because, with Kathryn’s variety of music, every part of my body has been invited to play.
— K.B.

Access and Privacy

You’ll have access to each playlist ahead of time, in case you'd like to preview it.

After each event, Zoom recordings of each session’s teaching portion will be available via email. Just ask.

For your privacy, I never record the practice portions.

When I show up and move in our community, I’m reminded how much more alike we are as human beings than we are different. After my practice, I often notice a real connection to my body and a lift in my spirit.
— B.E.
